Gilas Pilipinas suffers narrow loss to Jordan in final FIBA World Cup qualifier

BOCAUE, Bulacan – Gilas Pilipinas failed to end its FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers campaign on a high note as it lost to Jordan, 91-90, on Monday, Feb. 27 at the Philippine Arena.

Despite a career-high 41 points from naturalized player Justin Brownlee², Gilas Pilipinas could not complete a comeback from a 16-point deficit in the second half and saw its four-game winning streak snapped by Jordan.

Jordan was led by Ahmad Alhamarsheh and Dar Tucker, who scored 24 and 23 points, respectively. The visitors also dominated the boards, 51-35³, and shot better from beyond the arc, 12-of-28 compared to Gilas' 9-of-34⁴.

Gilas Pilipinas trailed by as much as 16 points in the third quarter but rallied behind Brownlee's hot shooting and cut the lead to just one point with less than two minutes left in the game.

However, Jordan held on with clutch baskets from Alhamarsheh and Tucker while Gilas Pilipinas missed some crucial free throws and three-pointers down the stretch.

The game was a rematch of their previous encounter last November 10 in Amman, where Gilas Pilipinas won by eight points⁵. Both teams have already secured their spots in the FIBA World Cup that will be co-hosted by Indonesia, Japan and Philippines next year.

Gilas Pilipinas finished second in Group A with a 7-3 record while Jordan placed third with a 6-4 record⁶.
