Pamilacan dancers retell
conversion tale in Cebu

CHILDREN dancers of whale hunters now renewed sea shepherds bring Bohol’s most astounding environmental conversion story to the country’s premier tourism promotion event in the Visayas this March 1 in Cebu.

Tribu Pamilacan would be representing cultural treasures of a fishing village and would be bringing in their best dancing form that handed them a major award during the Sandugo Street-dancing festival.

The tribe would be the province’s best dancing showcase at the launching of the Wealth of Wonders (WOW) Philippines diversity of cultures in a showcase billed as One Visayas to be held in Cebu, weeks from now, sources from the Bohol Tourism Office bared.

Homegrown choreographers led by Winston Sendrijas and Jeremeel Decasa, who have been handling dance workshops across the province have been reportedly staying in the formerly whale-hunting island of Pamilacan.

They aim to retrain and recreate the dancing form, which got the island contingent the Bohol Sandugo festival’s Best in Production Design award last year.

With Tribu Pamilacan, also expected to put up their cultural showcases are street dancers from top Visayan festivals as Sinulog, Maskara, Buglasan, Ati-atihan, Dinagyang and Pintados among others.

Tribu Pamilacan would be presenting in a highly choreographed dance drama a depiction of the extraordinary island life in Pamilacan especially when the fishers turned to a lucrative and yet dangerous whale hunting industry

The dance drama however ends with the story of how the fishers, with the help of government and non–government organizations have turned the anti-environment practice into one eco-cultural tourism enterprise that hauls for them the accolade as sea shepherds.

It may be recalled that Pamilacan was once best known for its stenchy backward fishing community, one it got from sun-drying whale meat.

Now, also from the island comes out one of the country’s fascinating news of ecological tourism which could possibly be Bohol’s greatest conversion story of the decade.

Wanting to build on that story, children dancers have been on the heat of rehearsals set after class hours to impress their story for the whole region to learn, choreographers said in an interview last Sunday.

The Provincial Government through the Bohol Tourism Office, the Ayala Foundation through Ms Bea Zobel and Joel Uichico, LGU Baclayon and some unnamed sponsors jointly fund the tribes Cebu performance, reports said.
