i've watched john lesaca play live, thrice, aside from watching his frequent tv appearances in the 1980s.

in the beginning, when he first came out as a wunderkind violinist, i concluded that his body movements were distracting. violinists just didn't move that way. but one's tolerance is increased along the way and i even got to later appreciate those body movements; he was playing solo anyway, without the backup of a full symphony orchestra or even a chamber orchestra.

when lesaca plays, he takes violin music to a level of accessibility for ordinary mortals. i remember him bursting into the cultural scene with his interpretation of antonio vivaldi's 'spring' (four seasons). i believe he is still king of philippine violinists until now, and a great genius at that for creating his own genre. his lofty status is assured.

somewhere in cebu city is a young man less than half the age of lesaca who is also a violin virtuoso. he may as yet be another lesaca. his name is marc hamlet mercado.

p.s. i own a violin myself. unfortunately, i'm not good at it.

Yes he is a cellist, but he has played violin and has mastered both cello and violin.

Another 'traditional' violinist that i also like would have to be Karen Briggs (i love her style).

Another 'traditional' one would have to be Samvel Yervinyan, who plays with Yanni.

yo yo ma also plays the piano, viola, and violin. his occupation is listed as cellist, composer, and pedagogue, in that order. violinist is not one of them. he has no body of work (recordings or famous performances) on the violin, so he is not known as a violinist.

we go by what a person is known for, so to speak.

we know winston churchill as a great british wartime prime minister and writer, not as a painter, though he did paint well.

the name james joyce conjures a great novelist, not a poet and playwright, though the guy wrote good poetry and plays.

famous romanian sculptor constantin brancusi was a good cook. no one called him a chef.

perry como was a barber, but we know him as a singer. sean connery was a truck driver. must we call him a truck driver?

i play (ugh!) the guitar and the violin. iâ€™m a housewife to my friends, not a guitarist or a violinist.

one day you may be known as a great doctor. your current background in biology and some units of islamic studies would not make you a biologist and an islamist.
