Mr. Ayag,

The name 'Dioscoro' has special implication for me because it is the name of my good friend, Dr. Dioscoro Villanueva, a man who I shadowed some years ago. And sir, isn't it your own name? For me, I really like classic names.

I was unable to attend the EB, sir, due to the cost of securing my apartment, as well as securing my first year's payment for medical school. I wanted to attend and visit the Philippines, but I thought it wise not to overburden my parents already. Someday pohon we shall meet, sir. Thank you so much for understanding, Mr. Ayag.

My Dad's name is Sofronio and he named all but one of his four sons after him: Sofronio, Jr., Sofronio III and Sofronio IV. The second son was named by my paternal grandmother as Tito - after my Mom's name Tita. Ingon akong Lola, "sige'g pareho sa ijang ngan, mapareho lang nija'ng bugoy!"

My maternal great grandfather was 100% Chinese from Guangzhao, China.

His Original name was Tan Ngai Feiyi; but changed his name to Mariano Tan when he arrived to the Philippines.

Why did he do it? Because he honored the Blessed Mother Mary. Mariano is the masculine form of 'Maria', which is the Spanish name for 'Mary'.

Lolo Mariano was from Macao City in Guangzhou region; which was a Portuguese territory for over 400 years. As a result of that, Roman Catholicism and Christianity was proliferated throughout the area and region. Even to this day, the hot bed of Roman Catholicism and Christianity in China is in around Macao and the Guangzhou region.

Lolo Mariano and his brothers, who also came with him to Philippines were already Catholics before they even came to Philippines.

Si Lolo Mariano was a very devoute member sa among church in Santo Nino Church in Valencia.

He was the one that carried the bell to the tower sa Santo Nino Church and was a very active member sa church as from what my mother and my late Lola Babing (my grand-aunt) told me.

It was Spanish Law that dictated all people living in the Philippines adopt Spanish surnames and Spanish names. Every single child born was given a Spanish name etc. Even if you were Malay Indio or Chinese immigrant, you had to adopt a Spanish name; that is why so many Chinese 'Hispanicized' their Chinese names.

There are Chinese-Filipino surnames that are 'Hispanicized' such as Tiongson, Tuangco, Hengrifo etc.

The naming of people in Spanish names became a cultural practice; imbedded within the psyche of the people. That is why even after Spain relinquished its control of the Philippines by 1898, many Filipinos still continued to give children Spanish names.

Even to this day.
