Some men and women worry that removing unwanted hair will actually result in a thicker, darker regrowth. Others are counting on this effect, shaving on the premise that thicker hair will replace thin hair. While there can be slight cosmetic differences in hair as a result of shaving, it's actually a myth that shaving makes hair grow back thicker.
What Shaving Does
1. According to Columbia University Health Services, when you shave unwanted hair, you are changing the shape and exposing the natural color of your hair. For example, light blond "peach fuzz" hair may have been lightened by years of sun exposure and likely has a thin, tapered end. Shaving this hair results in a flat, blunt end, which is more noticeable, and the regrowth of the hair will be in its original, potentially darker color. The darker regrowth and the blunt end cause hair to appear thicker, but the actual width of the hair follicle does not change.
Shaving longer scalp hair has the same effect. In addition, long, weighty hair may have slightly stretched each strand thin or weighed curls down. Shaving this hair will result in hair that appears thicker or fuller, but this hair will return to its previous condition once it reaches a similar length.
According to Columbia University Health Services, another fact to take into consideration, if you're shaving long hair, is that new growth can appear healthier and thicker because it hasn't yet been subjected to sun, pollution, styling chemicals and heat.
Hair follicles produce hair of a consistent width. According to the Duke University Library Answers Person, hair follicles have no way of "knowing" if you've cut your hair or not. This means that whether you have a little spot of peach fuzz, or shoulder-length baby-fine hair, the follicle will consistently produce hair of the same thickness even after it's been cut or shaved.
If your hair is thin and unhealthy due to chemical treatments or styling, shaving may produce thicker hair, but this is only because it's restoring your hair to it's pre-damaged condition.
