Me ..... personally many times na tawon like this:

With Philippine Airlines b4 Germany to Manila - Pilipino steward- asked whether I am a Thai girl.

Was in Disco before - a young man approached me and asked- Are you a Brazilian girl?

Came from the Philippines vacation very dark color gjod - a man at the Airport asked me: Are you and African girl?

The funniest thing I experienced: I was in Frankfurt airport and I took my luggage- a group of Filipinas came to me and said.... dali- dali kayo, nandito si Lorna Tolentino.  (they wer five of them).... one came and said: Lorna?  I was much surprised, and the best was
while  perting nahong bomba sa Artesian wheel pump, kids passed and commented look THERE IS A b***t - and maybe next time.... i hope more better

I always get mistaken for a Latina.

Latinos come up to me all the time and would automatically start talking to me in Spanish. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to sheepishly say, "No Habla Espanol"... :P

Even Pinoys think I'm Latina.  ;D

Mag kat-on na gyud ko'g Spanish ani oi kay kapoyan na gyud ko estoryahon ko nga dili ko kasabot.  ::)

Title: Re: Have you ever been mistaken for another nationality?
Post by: Lorenzo on September 11, 2007, 12:58:41 AM

Hahaha Leo. I can relate with you man, out here in western Pennsylvania, the people are what i would call 'red necks' and have been depraved of multiculturalism, to say the least. They think everyone who is dark skinned as 'Mexican' or anyone with semblance of oriental phenotype as being 'chinese'. So the last time my family came to visit me in college--we went to a nice country restaurant--and the waitress mistook my father, myself and my younger brother as being 'Mexican' LOL and that momma and my younger brother as 'chinese' LOL. We had to explain to them that we were Filipino--and sad to say the waitress didnt even know what that was; or in her own words "Y'alls look the same to us--and sorry 'bout da misconception".

But thinking about that, it really does strike home to me how mixed the Philippines is. I mean you have Filipinos who have some semblance of Hispanic facial features (like my dad's side) and then there are those who have some kind of east asian phenotypic features (from either chinese, vietnamese or japanese ancestry) and then there are those who are endowned with the beauty of Malay features. ;) In the form of a beautiful and attractive brown or tan skin tone; thick and shiny black hair.

This will be a long list:

Indian
Chinese
Mexican
Panamanian
Spanish
Columbian
Puerto Rican
Cuban
Thai

the sad part is even Filipinos don't think I'm Filipino until I open my mouth.
Mexicans come up to me and speak Spanish alot. They usually give me a disgusted look when I tell them I don't speak Spanish. "Yeah lady, sorry to disappoint you but I'm Filipino".
I get discounts at Indian stores for being Indian, lol.
When am I going to be identified as Filipino. I guess I will just wear a wreath of lumpia around my neck when I roll out, lol.

One time also I saw a Pinay in the mall.  itribida lagi so I greeted her in tagalog coz it's safer, Kmusta po kayo?  Nakurat sya, she said, Ay, I thought you are a Mexican!  Ingon nako, Ngek, Bisdak po ako tubong Bohol!

Oh no, I am Filipino!  Ask pod ko unsa ilang language kay mura galisud mang English.  Ingon nya, Alemania!  I meant to score so I gathered my tinaguan na Deutch!  Wie gehts es ihnen? Mein name ist Grace... Dah nakurat ang mga German na pod!  She continued to speak German but limitado ra bya tawon akong Deutch unya dili pod ka tarong English to sila so apilan nlang ug sign language. Maayo nlang nahuman na concert so I can use my last Deutch: Auf wiedersehen! Gute Nacht!

This question is funny.  How could you be mistaken as a Filipino when you are a Filipino?
(Assuming that almost all of the members here are Filipino, because I have not encountered a foreigner ??)

???

In Germany, most of the people here think Im latina.  Some think I am turkish, some Spanish.  A fewer percentage would think I am a Filipino. I dont find it flattering though.

Im proud of the Filipina beauty.

Height maybe is a contributing factor too.  I stand 178 cm and that is tall for a filipina.  My grandma on the father side has spanish blood and she  looked and behaved like a real spanish too. Mugawas ang kinatsila labina sa pamalikas.  hehehe

My beautiful great grand mother (Lola Pinay) and great grand grand aunt (Pipay Lemon) were Spanish-looking as Spanish could be.  My cousins had traces of Spanish blood in their looks but I didn't get any trace at all, except for the love to eat merienda and to take siesta.  :D

Mao jud, 'te Ging.

Even if phenotype does not show it, the genotype is undeniable. The Spaniards mixed with the Filipinos in the islands, either they were priests, conquistadores, merchants etc. They mixed, nonetheless.

Just think--when they first arrived to the Philippines in 1521 and colonized it, beginning in 1565--the population of the Filipinos in the islands numbered no more than 500,000.

By the time of the Revolution in late 19th century--the population of Spain's Royal Colony in the Philippines numbered at 8 Million~.

The Spanish-Manila Galleon Trade with Nueva Espana guaranteed that mixing and introduction and constancy of flow. The Royal Port city of Cebu, for an example, was a hive for European Spaniards. Villas were built in Cebu for vacationing Spaniards, and many poor Spanish men and women made the Philippines their home. Marrying into the local culture and people.

Impossible kaayo to deny our Spanish roots, when it is just so evident.

When the Americans first arrived in the Philippines in the late 19th century, many of them were surprised: as the environment was similar to that of Mexico (note that America had many military ventures into Mexico in the 19th century {Mexican American War/ Pancho Escapade etc})

Fact: Most if not all Filipinos spoke, and read Castillian Spanish by the time of the 19th century. The Lingua Franca of the day was Spanish. The way the Tagalog and the Bisaya communicated with each other was through Castillian Spanish. The language of business was Spanish. The language of the military, government, juidicial, the language of the Church was Spanish. The Philippines reached a pinnacle of Hispanization in that epoch. Most of the politicians and revolutionista leaders were themselves either half Spaniards or part Spanish.

The famous Jose P. Rizal, was a Spanish Mestizo. His mother being part Spanish and his father a Chinese-Filipino merchant.

The man by the name of Andres Bonifacio, was also another Spanish mestizo.

The great writer, Marcelo Del Pilar, a great Filipino Apologist and pro-independence writer in La Solidaridad in Spain, was also of Spanish decent.

To the amazement of the Americans, when they arrived in Spanish Philippines, was the fact that the Philippines was more 'Latin' and or 'Spanish' than it was Asian.

lol.

Half a Millenia of Spanish amalgamation and cultural imprinting can do that to you. :P

Interesting historical tid-bit.
Cebu is known for its 'Spanish Guitars'

The historical reason for this is due to the heavy presence of Spanish performers that came to Cebu in the 18th-19th centuries; as the city had heavy Spanish presence. And even to this day.

Que eres muy Hispanismo!

Note, that many and most Filipino kundiman folk songs have such tunes. Spanish tunes.

working in manila in the mid 90s brought me regularly to the headquarters of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). each time i came, security people would express amazement at my being boholano which was reflected in my driver's license that i presented as identification: they thought i was malaysian, japanese, thai, burmese... in tagbilaran, some people have approached me on the street speaking english thinking that i don't speak bisaya. one time, someone even greeted me with, "hi joe" while i was taking a late afternoon walk. this is very amusing given that i look every inch a filipino.

grabeh!  i'm every other asian national except filipino.  i've been japanese, vietnamese, chinese, thai, and lately, indonesian.

once, in a mideast country, the banana republic and i waited for his car service in a lobby where there was a group of filipinos waiting for their bus service to their workplace.  when the banana left, i turned to them to say hello.  they weren't very welcoming.  they only looked at me as if i came from another planet.  so i told them that like them, i'm a filipino (i knew they were filipinos because they were speaking tagalog.)  weird.  they even doubted my own declaration.

"bakit iba ang salita niyo," someone asked.
"we were speaking cebuano," i said.
"ah, bisaya pala."
"yes, and you must not expect all filipinos to speak tagalog only," i answered, already pissed off with the way the word 'bisaya' was dropped.
"akala kasi namin, japanese ka at yung asawa mo ay arabo."

doggone moon. >:(

I am always mistaken as a Chinese, my Mom gene's gave me this slanted eyes. When I was applying for a visa in Cambodia, the foreign affairs officer told me I don't need one, just tell them I am Cambodian and my tongue was cut-off by the Khmer Rouge (how am going to say that without a tongue). In Vietnam I am a Vietnamese, in Thailand I look like Thai.

But when a little girl in remote Cambodian province called me Russian... that one blew my sanity.
