SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 news) - Family and friends aren't the only ones stopping by your house this month, some nasty germs seem to be making the rounds.
And 80 percent of infections and illness are caused by human contact.
Healthy Utah magazine just did a report on the top twelve germiest objects. And the article did not talk about public restrooms or shopping carts! Every object can be found right in your own home.
Let’s start with the television remote.
You touch it, your kids grab it, men won't let go of it and all that human contact can add up to a lot of germs.
Eileen Risk from the Salt Lake Valley Health Department says "Bacterias, viruses, the common cold virus, influenza viruses, they are all very common and can survive for up to two days on hard surfaces."
Speaking of hard surfaces, almost nothing comes in contact with your face as often as your telephone.
"If there are germs on the phone and that phone is by your mouth then you can injest the germs and it's a way to cause illness," Risk says.
Now for one of the nastiest spots in your home when it comes to germs, and it's not your toilet. It's the bathroom soap dispenser.
Researchers say you can get as many as ten million bacteria on your hands every time you pump, and that includes some staph infections.
Health experts say just make sure you are scrubbing before touching anything.
Risk says, "Germs are everywhere, and some germs actually keep you healthy but many do cause illness and they are through out your home."
Now for your germ battle plan: Salt Lake Valley Health Department says clean your remote, phone and computer key board at least once a week with a disinfectant wipe or spray. Sanitizer alone won't do the job, and clean more often, at least once a day, if anyone in your house is sick.
