Malaysia sent hundreds of soldiers to a Borneo state on Monday to help neutralise armed Filipino intruders who have killed eight police officers in the country’s bloodiest security emergency in years.

Nineteen Filipino gunmen have also been slain since Friday in skirmishes that shocked Malaysians unaccustomed to such violence in their country, which borders insurgency-plagued southern provinces in the Philippines and Thailand.

The main group of intruders comprises nearly 200 members of a Philippine Muslim clan, some bearing rifles, who slipped past naval patrols last month, landed at a remote Malaysian coastal village in eastern Sabah state’s Lahad Datu district and insisted the territory was theirs.

Malaysia Attacks Filipino Rebels With Jets and Mortars
By FLOYD WHALEY
Published: March 5, 2013

MANILA – Malaysian forces used fighter jets and mortars, followed by a ground assault, on Tuesday to attack Filipino gunmen seeking to reclaim parts of northern Borneo Island for a defunct sultanate in the southern Philippines.

It was unclear how many of the nearly 200 Filipinos in the armed group were killed or wounded in the attack, but the Malaysian state news agency Bernama said no Malaysian forces were killed. It was also unclear if the assault had resolved the issue.

“The government must take action to defend the country’s dignity and sovereignty as demanded by the people,” Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said in announcing the attack.

The incident began on Feb. 12 when members of the group came over on boats to the remote village of Lahad Datu in northeastern Malaysia. The group represented itself as a royal militia in service of the Sultanate of Sulu, an Islamic kingdom that for centuries ruled the southern Philippines and parts of what is now Sabah state in Malaysia.

Under orders from a self-proclaimed sultan based in Manila, the armed group tried to resurrect the sultunate’s claim to the area despite pleas from both the Philippine and Malaysian governments that it return to the Philippines.

Since the incursion, the Malaysian authorities have launched multiple assaults on the group, whose members had dispersed into neighboring villages, authorities said. More than 21 people have been killed in fighting in recent weeks related to the incident.

The continuing violence in Sabah, which has escalated into one of the most serious security emergencies in recent Malaysian history, has strained relations between the two Southeast Asian allies. Late Monday, the Philippine secretary of foreign affairs, Alberto del Rosario, met with the Malaysian defense and foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur in an attempt to lessen tensions.

Malaysia's use of air strike on Sultan's followers illegal
 (philstar.com) | Updated March 5, 2013 - 2:02pm

MANILA, Philippines - The use of air strikes by Malaysian security forces against the followers of the Sultanate of Sulu is illegal, an international law professor  said on Tuesday.

Lawyer Harry Roque of the Institute of International Legal Studies at the University of the Philippines said the Malaysian government has "committed an international wrongful act."

"Under human rights law, the use of force in police operations should be absolutely necessary and strictly proportional to the threat posed by the Filipinos in Sabah," Roque said in a statement.

He hinted that the Malaysian government has used excessive force in dealing with the members of the Sultanate royal army who are now holed up in Lahad Datu.

"Respect for the right to life of a police suspect requires that the nature and degree of force used be proportionate to the threat posed by the suspect to the safety and security of the police officers, other individuals and society as a whole.

"Malaysian law enforcement officials should, as far as possible, apply non-violent means before resorting to force, and in particular, the resort to airstrikes," he added.

Roque also appealed to the Philippine government to demand to the international community to stop Kuala Lumpur from violating the human rights  of Filipinos in Malaysia.

"The Philippine government, in addition to espousing the rights of its nationals, should also demand that the international community should ask Malaysia to cease and desist from further breaching human rights law. It should later be asked to pay compensation to the victims for its use of disproportionate use of force," he said.  - Dennis Carcamo

Royal Malaysian Airforce's Mig-29 Squadron on prowl. These were most probably sent to bomb the Filipinos in Lahad Datu. They carry sidewinder missiles as well as cluster bomb munitions.

The Chinese are smart, they will utilize this situation to their advantage. I'm sure their government will try to paint the Philippines as an "expansionist" threat.

They have, since December 2012, walled off Scarborough Shoal and have prevented any Filipinos from coming close. They have already intensified their patrol in the islets outside of Panatag Shoal.

Considering the blunt force of the Malaysians, at least the Chinese were not as aggressive. They didn't shoot any Filipino fishermen or sink any of ships of the Philippine Navy.

The Malaysians are a bit too excessive.

Considering the Chinese government and Philippine government are at odds with each other over the scarborough shoal incident, one can be grateful that diplomacy won the day in regards to manila and beijing. Thank goodness China actually practices restraint, unlike the Malaysians.
