China condemns "barbaric" shooting of Taiwanese fisherman
« on: May 11, 2013, 03:55:29 PM »
BEIJING/TAIPEI, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The spokesman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office on Thursday strongly condemned the reported fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman by the Filipino military.

China demands the Philippines investigate the incident thoroughly and swiftly, Yang Yi said, labeling the shooting "barbaric."

"We are in deep mourning over the fisherman's death and express condolence over the shooting," Yang said.

According to the island's fishing authority and media reports, a Taiwanese fisherman was shot dead on Thursday morning when a Filipino military ship opened fire on a Taiwanese fishing boat.

The shooting occurred around 10 a.m. in a sea area some 180 nautical miles southeast of Erluanbi, the southernmost tip of the island of Taiwan, said Tsay Tzu-yaw, deputy head of Taiwan's fishery administration, earlier.

According to media reports, after killing the fisherman, the Filipino military ship continued to chase and fire in bursts at the Taiwanese vessel.

It escaped danger only after fleeing for more than an hour, with equipment onboard severely damaged, according to reports carried by Taiwanese media outlets.

Tsay said the Taiwanese boat lost its power shortly after that point.

Following the crew radioing for help, he added, certain boats came to assist the fishing vessel, which is expected to return to Taiwan on Friday. The island's marine patrol authority will also send vessels to help, according to Tsay.

It is unknown why the Filipino military ship opened fire, he said.

if they must suspend the acceptance of filipino workers, so be it.  it won't bring down the philippines.  we have to learn how to stand up to these moneyed neighborhood bullies somehow.

Taiwanese fishing boat provoked shooting: Philippines

The presidential office of the Philippines said Friday that its coast guard officers reacted appropriately in an incident in which a Taiwanese fisherman was shot dead, claiming that the fishing boat provoked the shooting.

Abigail Valte, a spokeswoman at the office, said at a press conference that the officers made an appropriate response after they fired into the air as a warning and the Taiwanese fishing boat refused to stop.

"The Taiwanese fishing boat attempted to ram our coast guard ship. It was without a doubt a provocative action," Valte said. The ship was operated by the coast guard but is technically part of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

Valte said the presidential office will decide whether to apologize over the incident after the results of an investigation are available.

Earlier in the day, Philippine Coast Guard commandant Rodolfo D Isorena said the officers were forced to fire at the unidentified boat when it attempted to ram their patrol vessel.

Asis Perez, director of the Philippines' Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, said the patrol vessel returned to port after two other boats, which did not have any identification flags, came to the rescue of the Taiwanese boat.

He said the coast guard officers were unaware that anyone had been injured or killed.

Perez said the shooting took place between Itbayat island and Luzon island. Itbayat is one of the Batanes islands, the northernmost point of the Philippines, and within the Philippines' territorial waters, he said.

The Taiwanese authorities have condemned the Philippines' use of lethal force against the fishing vessel and have demanded that the government apologize and provide compensation.

The Philippines authorities have suspended 11 law enforcement personnel for their roles in the shooting, pending an investigation, according to Isorena.

Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration has dispatched a vessel to tow the fishing boat back to port, as it suffered an engine failure. Some 32 bullet holes were reportedly found on the boat.

The boat was expected to arrive in Pingtung county in southern Taiwan early Saturday.
