German architects on Monday criticized that the world's tallest building opened in Dubai has set a bad example for building design.
This huge glass and ferroconcrete tower "hardly represents a sustainable contribution to current world building practices," said Christian Baumgart, president of German architects' association DAI.
The building is just a symbol of showing power without rational and economical thinking, said German architect Meinhard von Gerkan, who designed Berlin's central train station. Suffered by astronomical building and maintenance costs, such kind of buildings are hard to make profits, he said.
The Burj Dubai, opened on Monday is 828 meters tall, more than 300 meters taller than the Taipei 101 towers. It was designed by American architect Adrian Smith. It has 160 floors, using 330,000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete and the total area of glass reaching 103,000 square meters. (PNA/Xinhua)
