Japan's agriculture ministry will promote the spread of micro hydroelectric power generators in rural areas as part of moves to increase the use of renewable energy sources, officials said.
Starting in fiscal 2012 that begins in April, the ministry will provide financial support to municipalities conducting feasibility surveys and companies developing low-cost micro hydro generators, the officials said.
Last year's accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant led then Prime Minister Naoto Kan to set a goal of boosting the share of electricity from renewable energy sources to the total amount of power generated in Japan to 20 pct in the early 2020s.
