There is now more student loan debt than credit card debt in the US, and an entire cottage industry is dedicated to collecting that debt. The Department of Education pays about a billion dollars to debt collectors each year to track that money down. A new bill from Republican Tom Petri of Wisconsin would make some key changes to the way the government handles student debt - It would bring automatic withdrawals from borrowers' paychecks so that similar to those who owe taxes.
