Chess and Life and 2012We often compare life to a game - or in the case of Shakespeare to a stage! - and there is good reason for it: there are always winners and losers in games, as there are in life; further, winning depends on skill and knowledge (as we like to think if we are winners) and, if we are more honest, some luck or chance. In fact losers invariably blame luck or fate for their failure, very infrequently looking to themselves as the source of their failure. Perhaps the best game of all to compare life with is chess; and for this reason chess generally is considered the best - the most skilful - of all games, for it alone seems devoid of chance. With every card game, for example, there is always the element of chance with the shuffle of the pack, or with dice games there is always the chance of the throw. But with chess every move is the product of your own thinking, or lack of it. You originate your own destiny, and if you find yourself in check then it is because you have seriously contributed to being in that situation!
