Corporate News : Superfast 64M Synchronous DRAM(SEOUL, Korea) - The 64M DRAM has become a mainstream memory product, and Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) has developed a 64M synchronous DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) that is expected to rapidly replace conventional versions. Samples of the new device have been shipped out, and the world`s leading PC makers have confirmed that the reliability is excellent.
At 150MHz Samsung`s new device is the fastest 64M DRAM available; it will improve the performance of PCs it is used in by some 30% over the performance level possible with 100MHz devices. Samsung`s 64M synchronous DRAM is available in three configurations (x4, x8, x16), but the circuitry for each is the same. This has served to shorten the time needed to develop new devices and has alsosimplified the fabrication processes.
The market for the 64M synchronous DRAM is expected to be fully developed by 1997. Its application will extend to workstations, servers and mainframe computers that need a large memory capacity and high performance. It is also well suited for use in telecommunications hardware (ATM switching systems, etc.) andcan serve as the main memory of high-performance notebook PCs. Within one or two years, the 64M synchronous DRAM is expected to serve as the main memory device for regular desktop PCs.
Samsung Electronics already leads the 16M synchronous DRAM and 64M DRAM markets. The company will go into mass production of the 64M synchronous DRAM in the second half of 1996, giving Samsung Electronics a leading position in this new market as well.
Synchronous DRAMs currently available are mainly 16-megabit devices with speeds ranging betwteen 66MHz and 100MHz. By the year 2000, the synchronous DRAM isexpected to operate at speeds of between 250MHz and 500 MHz. Next year, synchronous versions will represent 20% of the DRAM market, or 20 million units. By1998, they are expected to make up at least half of the rapidly expanding 64MDRAM market, or 160 million units.
Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. (US$21 billion) is a world leader in the electronics, with operations in more than 60 countries. The company develops, manufactures, and markets audio and video products, household electronics goods, computers & peripheral products, display products, telecommunications & information systems, software tools & semiconductors. It is the flagship company of the Samsung Group (US$84 billion).
