Corporate News : Smallest and Lightest CDMA PCS Handset on the Market Introduced by SAMSUNGRICHARDSON, Texas--January 14, 1997--At the Consumer Electronics Show, Samsung Telecommunications America, Inc. (STA) introduced its CDMA PCS handset, the SCH-1011, and dual-mode CDMA Cellular handset, the SCH-110. The SCH-1011 is the smallest, lightest, and most compact CDMA PCS handset on the market, providing excellent voice quality and a full range of functions and options. This announcement from a leading provider of wireless communications underscores Samsung's commitment to CDMA solutions.
"Samsung's CDMA technology and experience, coupled with marketing expertise here at Samsung Telecommunications America's headquarters in Dallas, should give us a leading edge in the North American market," said Mr. Jeong Han Kim, President, STA. "We are committed to servicing this market by providing users with highly reliable, fully-featured and user-friendly CDMA products," he concluded.
User-friendly features include a unique menu-driven interface for easy access to functions like messaging and memory. Other features include caller ID, call timer, voice privacy, call restriction, power save mode, last number redial (up to 10 numbers), auto-lock, memory storage up to 100 numbers, SMS-Short Message Service, a large 3 line display for twelve characters per line plus 2 lines of icons, and more.
Talk time is 2 hours using the standard battery and 5 hours with the extended battery. Stand-by time is 20 hours standard and 60 hours extended. Handset dimensions are 5.7" (145 mm) length by 2.1" (53 mm) width by 0.9" (23 mm) depth. The handset weighs only 6.7 ounces (190 grams) with the standard battery and 8.9 ounces (252 grams) with the extended battery.
Portability and ease-of-use are critical to user acceptance. Weighing less than 7 ounces, these ergonomically designed handsets are feature-rich. "Because it is pocket-sized and weighs so little, users will not think twice about carrying the handset. This, of course, means that the handset is more useful, which in turn increases call volume to the Service Provider," said Ken Cho, Product Manager, Wireless Terminals.
Samsung chose to develop CDMA technology as it provides high quality voice transmission and security, superior call capacity and reduced cross-channel interference in comparison to TDMA technology. The main distribution strategy that Samsung is focusing on for this market is to partner with Carriers such as Sprint PCS, RBOCs, and Resellers who will offer their customers CDMA Cellular/PCS service. Retail channel development will evolve with the market.
Samsung's track record in providing CDMA solutions is extensive. In 1995, Samsung was selected by Shinsegi Telecom to provision the worlds largest commercial CDMA wireless communication service, due to its ability to deliver and support highly reliable equipment. In 1996, Samsung signed an agreement with Sprint PCS to deliver more than $600 million worth of its slimline, super-light CDMA PCS handsets.
The CDMA PCS and CDMA Cellular Handsets will be available for delivery 2nd quarter, 1997. These handsets will be offered to end users by CDMA Carriers. Each Carrier will define the price points and/or service sign-on promotional cost.
