SEOUL, Korea - Samsung Electronics (SEC) invested about US$ 25.8 million in  a 2-year R&D project involving 180 researchers to deveop a prototype CDMA personal communications service (PCS) system and terminals. Samsung displayed its new system at Expocom Wireless Korea '96 exhibition, at the Korean Exhibition Center (KOEX).  A test operation was demonstrated to showgoers and industry specialists from 10 o'clock AM on May 11.

PCS is a next-generation communications medium that promises inexpensive access  "any time, any place, to any one."   The system is rapidly being set up in Europe, the US and Japan. Korea plans to launch its own PCS system in January 1998, using code division multiple access (CDMA) technology.  CDMA is globally competitive and could mean a new high-growth industry for Korean companies.

Samsung has developed the personal computer exchange (PCX), a distributed control system that can  process up to 500,000 signals and accommodate at least 350,000 subscribers. The system is built so that each process is duplicated to ensure high reliability. A variety of base station transceiver subsystems (BTS) are available, so the most economical system for a particular user environment can be configured and system expansion is easy. Other products  developed for the system include a home location register,  with the capacity to handle 1 million subscribers, and an ultralight 170g PCS terminal.

On May 11 SEC displayed its new base  station and terminal.  The test operation connected terminals held by showgoers at the exhibition hall with the base stations, whtich were connected with the SEC Telecommunications R&D Center at Karak-dong via telephone exchanges in Young-dong and Karak-dong.

SEC is the first in the world to commercialize wide area CDMA service and is the first in Korea to begin mass production of CDMA terminals. The company expects to complete testing and receive approval for its PCS system and terminals by this October. Mass production is scheduled to start up in March of nest year so that commercial service can begin in January 1998, as planned.

The US consortium backing the CDMA format has acquired a major part of the PCS frequencies in public bidding, and the PHS service being tested in Japan with time division multiple access (TDMA) is changing to CDMA. These developments boost the chances for CDMA to dominate the world telecommunications market.
