(SEC) has finalized an agreement with Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Ltd. to export 20,000 CDMA hand-held phones (model no. SCH-100S). A second contract for an additional 20,000 units (model no. SCH-200F) is under negotiation and will be signed by the end of this year. The two deals together are valued at US$20 million and the first shipment is scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 1997.Samsung's first export of CDMA systems began with a shipment to Russia in February 1996. The current project is the first-ever export of CDMA terminals by a Korean company, evidence of Korea's growing technological lead in this area. The contract will also help Samsung Electronics to penetrate China, one of the world's fastest growing telecommunications market.The Hong Kong digital hand-held phone market has been dominated by the GSM standard, but CDMA is quickly gaining popularity for its outstanding service quality. In Hong Kong, CDMA service began with the installation of CDMA systems by Motorola Inc. and Hutchison Telecom's purchase of Qualcomm Inc.'s terminals in September. For its next deal, Hutchinson chose Samsung terminals, with better functions and lighter weight than the Qualcomm models.
