Corporate News : SAMSUNG to Market PC with DVD-ROM(SEOUL, Korea) - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC) invested some US$10 million and the efforts of around 60 researchers to develop a Digital Video Disk (DVD) Read Only Memory (ROM) drive (model number SDR-130). DVD has seven times the memory capacity of a regular CD-ROM.
Samsung has now installed the device in a personal computer, along with a MPEG2 (compression) and AC-3 (DolbyTM surround sound) decoder cards to provide the full screen picture and sound quality found in movie theater. Other built-in features include a PentiumTM 166MHz CPU, 32 megabytes of basic memory, a 3.2-gigabyte hard disk drive, a 36.6Kbps fax modem and a 64-bit graphics card.
Wide screen compression is included, so the user can play DVD titles in the conventional 4:3 (horizontal-to-vertical ratio) or 16:9 wide screen. The sound track can be played in up to eight different languages, and on-screen subtitles can be made in as many as 32 different languages.
Industry watchers predict that the DVD-ROM will soon replace the CD-ROM in multimedia PCs. By the second half of 1997, the proliferation of DVD-ROMs and development of MPEG2 software are expected to bring prices down enough that the DVD-ROM PC will become commonplace, and competition among companies making the products will be very severe. Samsung's multimedia PC (model name: Magic Station #M555D) will go on sale in Korea in January 1997. Exports will start few months later. In Korea, Samsung expects to sell about 100,000 units in 1997.
Samsung Electronics recently commercialized its own DVD player, and now having a DVD-ROM PC of its own, is ready to compete head to head with its Japanese and American rivals.
