Corporate News : SAMSUNG Mass Producing Energy Efficient 64M DRAMSamsung Electronics Co. (SEC) has completed development and begun mass production of a unique version of 64M DRAM that requires only half the power of other 64M DRAMs or 40% lower the power needed to run four 16M DRAMs. Samsung used 0.32-micron CMOS design technology to develop the super-energy-efficient device. The regular refresh cycle has been doubled in length, minimizing power consumption.
The new device can operate on only 3.3 volts. An `Extended Data Out` mode has been built in for maximum user convenience. The new 64M DRAM version also comes with a `Plug & Play` function, allowing easy installation of multi-chip modules.
The new device is ideal for use as the main memory in personal digital assistants, notebook PCs and other portable systems that require low-power-consuming components. Its use will also grow in desktop PCs, as demand increases for power-saving models in the interest of energy conservation and environmental protection.
Samsung Electronics has already sent out samples of its new device to notebook PC makers, and their evaluations have been completed. Mass production is scheduled to start up in October at 150,000 units a month, and the company plans to double monthly output to 300,000 units in 1997.
Many semiconductor makers are working on the development of super-power saving 64M DRAMs, but Samsung will be the first in the industry to go into mass production.
According to a June 1996 report by DataQuest, world demand for 64M DRAMs will be worth US$ 3.4 billion in 1996, US$ 13.6 billion in 1997 and US$ 3 billion in 1998, an annual growth rate of at least 500%.
