Corporate News : SAMSUNG Mass Producing 12.1 inch TFT-LCDsSeoul, Korea, April 26, 1996 - Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) announced today that it had begun shipping out 12.1 inch thin film transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) earlier this week. By being the first to go into mass production, Samsung has gotten a head start on industry rivals in the multimedia PC market. Moreover, the Samsung product is second to none in terms of performance and quality.
The 12.1 inch version is the largest TFT-LCD that can be installed in a notebook PC. Samsung`s unique high aperture ratio design results in a very clear image on the screen. A low-power-consuming driver circuit allows the product to operate at 2.5 watts or less. The number of pixels is super-VGA class, enabling the device to reproduce 260,000 color shades. Samsung`s new TFT-LCD is 275 mm wide and 200 mm high and less than 8 mm thick. So, the notebook PCs it is used in can be made smaller and lighter than models currently available.
The world notebook PC market is growing by at least 20% a year. Last year, the 10.4` TFT-LCD was the main display used in notebook PCs, but from this year 11.3` and 12.1 inch versions are going into wide use. The 12.1 inch model is the largest size possible for this application and is expected to become the industry standard for multimedia notebook PCs.
Because of the high quality on-screen image and performance of Samsung`s TFT-LCD, coupled with the trend towards notebook PCs with larger screens, company officials expect to get well established in the market this year. Therefore they decided to invest US$308 million (W240 billion) to set up a second mass production line in Kiheung, Korea, during the first half of this year.
The production line #2, which is set to start up in the second half of this year, can process siex 12.1 inch panels on a 650 mm x 550 mm (third-generation) motherglass substrate, rather than the normal number of four panels per substrate produced at other plants. By the end of the year, Samsung`s monthly production capacity will reach 180,000 TFT-LCD panels (various sizes). With this increased capability and continuous further investments on the R&D and production, Samsung Electronics expects to emerge as the world`s third largest LCD maker by the year 2000.
