Corporate News : SAMSUNG in Chinese On-line Cash Service ProjectThis is to be the first stage of the "Green Card Project," a plan formulated in 1994 to connect over 55,000 Post Office branches in some 3,000 cities (including all the major metropolitan areas) throughout China's 30 provinces.
Samsung Electronics will provide desktop PCs (model #: SSM8000/5100), routers, hubs and other network hardware to form a distributed client/server system. Samsung will also set up a Development & Service Center.
The market in Chongqing and Kunming is large, and is expected to be the focal point of the Second Phase of the project, scheduled to start in 1998. Chongqing is the principal city in Sichuan, a province with 120 million people. Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, is filled with tourist attractions, and strong interest is being shown there by banks to develop an on-line cash disbursement system for tourists.
By 1997, China's Postal Ministry will have an on-line linkup between the Beijing Finance Settlement Center and the cities of Chongqing and Kunming. Plans call for a nationwide Post Office on-line network connecting 500 cities by 1998.
