Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Develops 0.5-micron ASIC Technology(SEOUL, Korea) - Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) has recently boosted its non-memory semiconductor business by developing 0.5-micron ASIC technology. Samsung first got involved in ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) products in 1984 and by 1994 had mastered 0.6-micron know-how. The latest advance will allow the company to make major inroads into the world ASIC market. The new technology will be a tool for accommodating client needs such as standard cellcircuit design, which makes possible large-scale integration of different circuitry, and gate array, which is NAND configured.
The new technology is essential for making new electronics products lighter, thinner and smaller. A single chip can be configured as the main controller for consumer electronics products as well as for telecommunications hardware, PCs, and other areas with complex functions. Application of this technology covers all areas of electronics. Armed with 0.5-micron ASIC design technology, Samsung Electronics can now design and deliver highly integrated, high-performance, multi-function ASIC products.
Samsung Electronics has also set up eight ASIC design centers in Korea, Japan, the US, Germany and Taiwan. These centers speed up new technology development and allow for product designs that suit specific market needs.
Eighty percent of the US$17 billion annual ASIC market is represented by 0.5-micron technology. However, 0.35-micron technology is steadily expanding its position in such areas as DVD, hand-held phones and MPEG-II products. Samsung Electronics developing 0.5-micron technology will save millions in annual import costs, which will substantially boost the internTational competitiveness of electronics products made in Korea.
Samsung expects the new technology to increase 1996 ASIC sales by US$100 million. By developing 0.35-micron technology in 1997, the company expects annual ASIC sales to reach US$300 million.
Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. (US$21 billion) is a world leader in the electronics, with operations in more than 60 countries. The company develops, manufactures, and markets audio and video products, household electronics goods, computers & peripheral products, display products, telecommunications & information systems, software tools & semiconductors. It is the flagship company of the Samsung Group (US$84 billion).
