Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics to Export Switching Systems to Latin AmericaSEOUL, Korea - Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) announced today that it has signed an agreement to supply switching systems to Ecuador, putting the company in a competitive position in the Latin American market. This is Samsung's first export of telecommunications systems to Latin America, an area that has been dominated by American and Japanese companies.
The US$15 million contract was signed in Ecuador on May 27 with Empresa Estatal de Telecommunicationes (EMETEL), an integrated telecommunications service company run by the local government. The turn-key project includes thirty-one SDX-RB switching systems that can accommodate up to 21,000 lines. In addition to other essential hardware such as optical cable, micro wafers and transmission equipment, Samsung Electronics will be in charge of training local engineers, too.
The network will cover mainly rural areas of Ecuador. Deliveries are set to start in November 1996 and the system will be in full service by October 1997. Samsung Electronics officials believe that they are now in a favorable position to take part in the second phase of EMETEL's project. The planned second phase calls for building up another 21,000 lines in the rural areas of Ecuador.
Samsung officials also believe that this deal will serve as a springboard for the company's telecommunications systems sales in Latin America. Due to numerous large-scale modernization projects in the area, the size of Latin American telecommunications market is expected to grow from a mere US$600 million in 1994 to US$4.9 billion in 1997.
