Corporate News : SAMSUNG Electronics Opens Up a Paging System in Shanghai(SEOUL, Korea) - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC) announced today that it has completed a turnkey project of a paging system covering the city of Shanghai, PR China. The paging system, delivered to Shanghai Guomai Communications Co., Ltd., has a capacity to handle 1.2 million subscribers. The system was formally opened at a ceremony attended by over 200 dignitaries on November 26. Other companies bidding for the project were Motorola Inc. and Glenayre Technologies Inc. (US-based companies).
Earlier this year (April 4th) Samsung Electronics signed a paging system contract with Yunnan Post & Telegraph Administration Bureau. The agreement calls for supplying a pager system that will serve the entire Yunnan province.
Samsung Electronics will supply US$25 million worth hardware over a 3-year period, including 110 paging systems each with the capacity to handle 1 million subscribers as well as 500 base stations, audio mailboxes, and transceivers. The turnkey project includes supply, installation and support services.
This year, no more than 30 million people in China had pager access. That figure is expected to increase to 260 million people (or 20% of the population) by the year 2000. Therefore, demand for paging systems with the capacity to handle over 1 million subscribers is set to take off in the country`s numerous tensely populated cities. With the recent paging system delivery, Samsung stands in good position to capture a major share of this world`s largest market.
