Corporate News : Interdigital, SAMSUNG and Siemens Unveil First B-CDMATM Hardware for The Wireless Local LoopInterDigital Communications Corporation (ASE: IDC), Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd and Siemens AG today unveiled the world's first Broadband-Code Division Multiple AccessTM Wireless Local Loop (WLL) hardware. The B-CDMATM solution is designed to offer the most comprehensive range of services and the highest quality transmission of any wireless local loop technology. B-CDMATM technology's broader bandwidth is designed to permit advanced features such as ISDN and bandwidth on demand for services such as wireline quality voice, high speed fax, data and multimedia, including video. This capability will enable carriers to deliver ISDN to the desktop in a fixed wireless application and ultimately in portable and mobile environments.
The presentation of B-CDMATM hardware at CeBIT '97 follows a tri-partite development and manufacturing effort between InterDigital, Samsung and Siemens. The core technology was developed by InterDigital while the hardware and software were developed using the engineering resources of all three companies.
This new technology is designed to allow carriers and other network operators to optimize revenues and earnings by easily connecting new subscribers and providing highly profitable broadband services. B-CDMATM technology is particularly suitable for areas where it is difficult or expensive to lay cable. In congested urban areas it eliminates the cost and disruption of physically laying new cable while dramatically reducing time required to generate revenue.
Commercial availability of the B-CDMATM WLL product is planned for the first half of 1998. The first field trials are expected to be underway by the end of this year. Production will take place at Samsung's factory in Kumi, Korea and Siemens' factory in Berlin, Germany. Initially, it will be offered as a fixed wireless product that provides e-mail and internet access, high speed, high quality voice, data and video. A second phase will provide neighborhood roaming and portability within cells of 5-15 kms radius. In the planned third phase, a fully mobile product will be introduced to deliver the full range of B-CDMATM capabilities on the move.
A new chip, manufactured by LSI Logic exclusively for InterDigital, incorporates B-CDMATM technology and provides essential functionality for B-CDMATM handsets, subscriber terminals and base stations. The ASIC will integrated into the subscriber terminal and base station which can be seen at InterDigital's stand at CeBIT '97. Testing and initial trials of the air interface by InterDigital, Samsung and Siemens have confirmed the ability to provide video communications over a fixed radio link to a laptop PC.
B-CDMATM technology distributes multiple simultaneous conversations and/or data transmissions across a broad segment of radio spectrum, typically 7.0-15 MHz wide. Each voice, fax, data or video transmission is assigned a unique code which both the transmitting and receiving ends know so that the transmission can be reassembled at the receiving end. Because of the broad spectrum, B-CDMATM technology will provide high immunity to interference and multipath propagation conditions inherent in an urban environment. B-CDMATM's resistance to interference makes it ideal for use in multiple access systems.
Target Markets Announced for B-CDMATM
As the first Broadband-CDMA hardware is launched at CeBIT Hannover, the three companies concerned, Samsung, InterDigital and Siemens, are already preparing an aggressive world wide marketing campaign, each focusing on markets where they have strong existing sales relationships.
Samsung`s current European telecommunications business has been built around significant sales in Eastern Europe. The company believes that B-CDMATM is particularly well suited to markets in Western and Eastern Europe. In Asia, Samsung has the first three trial sites planned for China, where work is expected to start later this year.
"By combining B-CDMATM wireless local loop with DLC (Digital Loop Carrier) equipment, Samsung is able to offer an exciting new telecommunications solution that is particularly well suited to the urban environment and can be introduced by existing PTTs as well as the newer generations of network operators," said Byung Kwan Bae, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Infrastructure Network Division at Samsung. "Customers expect Samsung&apos/s high level of expertise, due to our extensive experience in CDMA technology and implementation. We have already contacted a number of customers who have responded very positively," he added. Samsung is well established in the CDMA marketplace. In February 1997, Samsung signed a major deal with Korea Telecom to supply CDMA infrastructure equipment valued at US$300 million.
B-CDMATM lends itself to installation in areas where services have been disrupted and there is a need to rebuild basic telephony services quickly and easily. For regions with more developed telecommunications services, B-CDMATM offers easy access to ISDN services via fixed wireless local loop applications. As deregulation of local access occurs around the world, B-CDMATM can be used as a technology that will allow new entrants into the market supporting services that will surpass anything currently in place.
