CentOS Linux was a free and community-supported version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), a popular enterprise operating system. However, in 2020, Red Hat announced that it would shift its focus to CentOS Stream, a rolling-release distribution that serves as a testing ground for future RHEL updates. This decision effectively ended the development and support of CentOS Linux, which many users relied on for stable and secure servers. The last version of CentOS Linux, CentOS 8, will reach its end of life (EOL) on December 31, 2021.
There are several reasons why Red Hat made this change, such as aligning its resources with its business goals, increasing its innovation and feedback cycles, and reducing the confusion and fragmentation in the Linux ecosystem. However, many CentOS Linux users were unhappy and disappointed with this move, as they felt betrayed and abandoned by Red Hat. Some of them have migrated or are planning to migrate to other RHEL-compatible alternatives, such as AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, Oracle Linux, or Ubuntu
