Fiennes: Norwegians are a reason for expeditionFiennes: Norwegians are a reason for expedition
Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the polar explorer, has said that he was spurred to undertake his latest expedition in Antarctica because of competition with the Norwegians.
Veteran explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes is setting off today on the coldest journey on Earth, leading an expedition across the Antarctic.
The expedition, entitled the Coldest Journey, will see Sir Ranulph and his five-man team cross the continent during winter over a six-month period.
Hailed as the last great polar challenge, the journey across the Antarctic has never been attempted during the winter.
At 68, Sir Ranulph is the oldest explorer to attempt the crossing, and has been described by the Guinness Book of Records as "the world's greatest living explorer".
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the expedition launch, Sir Ranulph said that competition with the Norwegians was one of the reasons for undertaking the feat.
