USEP, Obrero, Davao City (2 December 2005) -- The Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture (OPAPA) will launch a
package of services for Davao provinces on December 7, 2005.
This consists of connectivity for two farmers' cooperatives, a tie up with the
PLDT using the WEROAM Wireless Internet, launching of the farmers' call center through tie-up with SMART SMS Care service, and ICT training for coop officials and local government agricultural technicians.
The launching will be on December 7, 2005, from 9 am to 12 noon at the Provincial Capitol Gym, Barangay Matti, Digos City, Davao del Sur.
The OPAPA, or the Pinoy Farmers' Internet, is an ICT based extension support project by the Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with 13 other local and international organization.
The project aims to provide online content in agriculture, advisory services, production guides, e-learning, market opportunities, and text messaging services to extension workers and farmers. The project is funded by the e-Gov Fund of the government, administered by the Commission on Information and Communications Technology. It is one of the four component projects of the K-AGRINET or the Knowledge Networking for Enterprising Agricultural Communities.
For Mindanao, the pilot site is Davao Provinces, and the project is implemented by two nodal centers - the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in Kabacan, North Cotabato, and the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) in Obrero, Davao City.
Internet link of two farmers' Cooperatives: Magsaysay Farmers' Multipurpose Cooperative and the Poblacion Hagonoy Upper Sinayawan Farmers' Irrigators Multipurpose Cooperative (PHUSFIMCO) in Hagonoy - both from Davao del Sur. Both cooperatives operate wide rice areas and have successfully grown hybrid rice. The Magsaysay cooperative is now venturing into organic rice farming. Samples of these products will be on display during the launching. The area has no communication facilities.
