No impending rallies, mass actions in Region 8 - PNP
Tacloban City (24 June 2005) -- Despite the scheduled rallies by militant groups in Manila, the Philippine National Police in Region VIII declared that Eastern Visayas is generally peaceful and that there are no reports of impending rallies or any mass actions have reached the office.
The Philippine National Police VIII further observed that the scandals/controversies confronting the present administration has not in any way affected the peace and order condition in the region.
Chief Supt. Dionisio Coloma Jr., PNP regional director said that 100 policemen has been deployed to Tacloban City but this is only to help maintain the peace and order during the city's fiesta celebrations.
"We need to take the necessary precautions because so many people come to Tacloban during the fiesta season," Coloma said, adding that he has instructed all provincial directors to monitor people coming from Mindanao who will come for the city fiesta celebrations.
Further, random mobile checkpoints are being conducted in various areas of the city and Police Assistance Centers have been established in the Fiesta activity centers particularly at the RTR Plaza, Balyuan Tower and Children's Park.
To avoid traffic congestions, traffic will be temporarily rerouted during the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival on June 29. (PIA
