Region 8 acquires first community e-centerTacloban City (23 June) -- The first Community E-Center in Region VIII was formally inaugurated recently at the ground floor of the municipal hall of Tanauan, Leyte. The occasion was attended by the director of operations of the National Computer Center (NCC), Dir. Theresa Camba, Congresswoman of the First District of Leyte, Hon. Remedios L. Petilla, the Municipal Mayor of Tanauan, Atty. Roque A. Tiu, the municipal and barangay officials, members of the academe and non government organizations.
The Community E-Center is a project of the NCC intended to serve the public through the use of internet thus opening the electronic highway to the municipalities. This is in answer to the 10 point agenda of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo which she spelled out in her State of the Nation Address.
Included in the project is the transfer without cost to the municipality of 4 units of computer sets with printer and video cam and a 4 in 1 machine for telephone, fax, copier and scanner.
The E-Center offers internet services and tutorials in computer operations at very affordable fees. The employees are allowed to learn computer operations starting at 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon. It is open to the public from 8:00 o'clock in the morning to 12:00 o'clock midnight. The Municipal Library was transferred to the center to complement the operations of the Center and so that researchers will only visit one venue.
Aside from Tanauan, Leyte, the other Local Government which is a recipient of a similar project from NCC is Tolosa, Leyte, located 6 kilometers south of Tanauan. Mayor Hilario Caadan and the other Municipal and Barangay Officials were also present during their inauguration. The e-center here is not yet operational though during the inauguration. (PIA
