Commentary: Imagineering RP in 2007
Tacloban City (December 31 2006) -- In just a few hours, as the country hopefully awaits, the country will witness the changing of the year 2006 to 2007.

It feels good, looking back at the year which is nearing its end because of the significant milestones that happened – the strong rebound of the Philippine economy from the very sick to one the growth of which is continuously on the rise, thanks to the firm determination of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and the country’s leaders emboldened by the willingness of the people to sacrifice and support the thrusts.

The year which is on the verge of being a year that was, witnessed heightened national pride because of the honors brought to the country by Filipinos excelling in various endeavors from beauty tilts to sports, to the Presidents presiding over a very powerful United Nations committee.

Despite the political hullabaloos, the failed inciting of people to go to the streets to topple down the Administration, the year 2006 saw time and again, the upholding of the rule of law and the strengthening of the country’s political system.

The several disasters and calamities which happened in the country in 2006, proved to be the show window of world brotherhood and cooperation and showcased the resiliency of the Filipinos, able to bounce back with dignity after every misfortune that befell them.

The year 2006 closes with the grade of good for the country—stronger peso, 9-year high stocks market, better investor confidence and more business coming in, more employment generated, continuous economic growth.

The specialists say the year 2006 could have been a better year for the Philippines. This is indeed true. There is no use dwelling on if’s and but’s. What the country to have a better year in 2007 as 91% hopeful Filipinos are wishing for, is the firm determination of the leaders and all the Filipinos to bring into fruition, what everybody is wishing for.

What the country needs is not re-engineering. Methinks, the country needs Imagineering, the master planning, creative development, design, engineering, production, project management, research and development of what the Filipinos aspire the country to be.

The country in 2007 needs leaders and Filipinos who are a talented corps of imagineeners who dare to dream of good things, even things which the pessimists think impossible, for the common interest of the Filipino people. But they do not stop at merely dreaming, they plan and research for ways in order to make the dreams come true. This is the secret of Walt Disney. He imagined a magical place for the children and adults alike. He however, did not stop at just imagining, he worked hard to build that dream. The result, Disneyland, the rest is history.

As the country waits for the coming in of the year 2007, let us start imagining what we want ourselves, our families, our local government units, our country to be next year and then start working towards the fulfillment of the things we have imagined.

We imagine a country where peace and prosperity prevails, where people are united, where every family enjoys the benefit of quality education and good paying jobs. As the year 2007 comes in, let us start to be a corps of imagineers, building the fruition of the things we imagine for the country and its people. (PIA
