Iloilo City (1 December 2005) -- About 24 million people living in the uplands in the country are putting tremendous pressure on the forests.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said that efforts to restore some 86,000 hectares of denuded forests within five years include the reduction of upland population.
According to a
study conducted by the University of the Philippines Population Institute in 2003, Western Visayas is next to Central Visayas in having the most number of occupants, which is 2.5 million over an area of 613,529 hectares. Central Visayas' upland occupants are spread over an area of 535,919 hectares.
It is not only these two which are on top of the list of reduction in upland population. The DENR said that there are additional 13 upland regions included in the effort.
According to the UPPI, studies show that population in the uplands would double in 30 years if present trends in upland population growth remain, coupled by continuous lowland-to-upland migration at an annual average growth rate of 2.8 percent.
The effort to reduce population in the uplands is part of the population management program which the government undertakes with NEDA funded by Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) under the Overseas Development Assistance (ODA). (PIA 6)
