San Fernando City, La Union (2 December 2005) -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared December as National Press Congress Month and the Month of the Community Press in the Service of the Nation to honor and give due recognition to
publishers, writers, editors,
journalists and broadcasters as well as to uphold the government’s respect for press freedom.
As embodied in Proclamation No. 944 issued on November 22, it states that there’s a need to give recognition on the important role the Publishers Association of the
Philippines Inc. (PAPI) is continuously doing in upholding press freedom, the dignity of journalism and publishing profession.
Another feature of the proclamation include, the
vital role of PAPI to lead the National Press Congress as one of the main events to highlight press freedom thru a special gathering for print and broadcast media in the country.
Meanwhile, Press Sec. Ignacio Bunye reiterated the appeal of Pres. Arroyo from the media to highlight also the gains of our economy since the Arroyo administration is firmly resolved to sustain the economic momentum that will keep the Philippines in the leading edge of international competitiveness.
“We hail our overseas workers who have kept the economy buoyant. This is the time to surge forward and not to fall back, as the forthcoming year brings good hope for a better life for our people,†Bunye said.
