MMDA traffic experiment on EDSA-Shaw Boulevard not successful

MANILA, Sep. 2 2002 (PNA) -- The week-long traffic experiment by
the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in the EDSA-Shaw
Boulevard area was declared unsuccessful.

MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando said the experiment which
disallowed the use of service roads in the area for public utility
buses was not effective.

"It was not successful," Fernando admitted.

"We have to use another scheme to address the traffic problem
in said area," he added.

Fernando said they have stopped the experiment since the
commuters were burdened by walking about 500 meters from Shaw
Boulevard to the loading and unloading area at the both end of the
vehicular underpass along EDSA.

MMDA started pilot testing the system which disallowed PUBs
from using the northbound service road in the area last Monday.

It lasted for a week, which proved to be a drag for the public
since the traffic congestion in the area was not  solved.

Fernando, however, said the other traffic problem solutions
they tested which included the breaking and putting away of the
railling in-front of the SM Megamall  Building A, was a success.

He said traffic in the area decreased because buses were given
a chance to load and unload passengers for a longer time space than
before.

Closing of the exit gates of parking space, exiting directly
to EDSA from the same mall has also hepled in easing the traffic in
the area, he noted.

Fernando said they will not stop looking for practical
solutions to the problem of traffic along the EDSA stretch. (PNA)
