Commentary: Let the people’s voice prevail on Cha-cha

Tacloban City (January 31 2006) –- President Gloria Macapagal’s humble acceptance of the CBCP suggestion to basket the No-el proposal of Concom, is a tangible manifestation of her firm belief for the democratic processes and the rule of law. The President just showed that she is a President who listens to the voice of the people in a democratic society. For her the opinion of each and every Filipino counts and must be heard.

As the Palace said, there will be elections in 2007 unless the people say otherwise in a constitutionally sanctioned process.

The continuous debate on Charter Change is encouraged in all sectors of the country. Even the opposition is encouraged to engage in a healthy debate on charter change. It is the only way by which the people will be enlightened on the specific proposals.

Charter change is a campaign promise of the President. In fact, among the presidential candidates, she is the only one who promised charter change. She is fulfilling her campaign promises and so is her mandate to do the best she could and to serve as long as her oath demands.

She has promised the people a complete overhaul of the system and a full term economic development plan to go with it. The country is now experiencing the result of the economic measures that were implemented to a great economic take off.

With her leading, the country is geared towards economic, political and social development through Charter Change. In order that the change will be for the best, every option must be discussed and debated upon by all the sectors of the society but especially those who are supposed to lead the people to the right point of view.

The invitation for the opposition to join in the debate for charter change stands. Their commitment to the vow they have made to serve the people should prod them to heed the Filipino people’s cry for change.

In the end, it is the general clamor of the people and the people’s decision which must prevail. (PIA 8)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
