Eleven water projects under KALAHI-CIDSS completed in Region 8
Tacloban City (October 2 2006) -- "Life seems more comfortable now. Thanks to the water system construction project under President Arroyo's KALAHI-CIDSS program."

This is the joyful remark of a volunteer who helped construct his barangay's water project.

He is but one of the many happy beneficiaries of the eleven water systems projects which have already been completed in the three provinces of Leyte, Eastern Samar and Biliran, under the Kapitbisig Laban sa Kahirapan- Comprehensive Delivery of Basic Services: Kapangyarihan at Kaunlaran sa Barangay (KALAHI-CIDSS:KKB).

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 8 Director Letecia Corillo informed that of the sixty five completed projects in the Region under the KALAHI-CIDSS:KKB, eleven are water system projects.

She said that the beneficiary barangays are from the municipalities of Leyte, Leyte; Maslog, Eastern Samar; San Policarpo in Eastern Samar; Can-avid in Eastern Samar; and Balangiga also in Eastern Samar.

Director Corillo said that the total sub-project cost for the eleven water projects is five point five (P5.5M) million. She added that P1,077,622.17 of the total cost came from the municipal government, the barangay government and the community members who, alongside with skilled workers, worked for free during the implementation of the project.

The KALAHI volunteers and members also handled the financial transactions under the guidance of the KALAHI workers assigned in the areas. This is in consonance with one of the aims of the project which is to empower the barangay people in the planning and implementation of development projects in their respective areas.

The completed water projects will benefit more than 1,066 direct household beneficiaries and are expected to serve more depending on the operations and maintenance strategies of the community structures, Director Corillo said.

At present, the municipal local government unit, the barangay government, community residents and the Barangay Waterworks Sanitation Association are managing the water systems project of the respective barangays, Director Corillo concluded. (PIA 8) [top]
