Butuan City (24 June 2005) -- "Its going to be one 'bloody' month this July!"
To strengthen collaboration and increase awareness on the
importance of blood donation, July was declared as Blood Donor's Month pursuant to Republic Act 7719 otherwise known as "Blood Services Act of 1994". This month long celebration is spearheaded by the Department of Health in partnership with the Local Government Units, Philippine National Red Cross, Regional Blood Coordinating Council and other significant stakeholders.
This year's theme is "Celebrating your gift of blood… be one of us, donate blood". The celebration aims to gain support from the LGUs, PNRC, allied medical staff, the voluntary blood donors and other stakeholders.
The Blood Donor's Month is celebrated nationwide to honor and give recognition to people who donated their precious and life-saving blood voluntarily without any monetary consideration in order to give the most valuable gift of all - to save someone's life.
Accordingly, the main purpose of the celebration is not to attract huge number of voluntary blood donors, but rather to create wider awareness on the importance of voluntary unpaid blood donation and encourage more people to become regular donors. It aims to have a supply of safe blood for use wherever and whenever it is needed to save lives.
In Caraga, to commemorate this month long activity, DOH has lined up several activities. These include radio and television guestings, hanging of streamers, and jingle making contest. The Health Department will also conduct a Mass Blood Donation Showcase and Regional Sandugo Awarding Rites. Voluntary blood donors who have donated at least 9 gallons and more of blood will be the recipient of the Sandugo award. (PIA AMO-13)
