Filipinos want to keep democracy alive

Commentary: On the ouster move
Tacloban City (November 1, 2007) -- If they really care about the best interest of the country and the Filipino people, the few detractors who are calling for the ouster of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo should just wait for 2010 rather than doing their best to destroy the gains of a strong economy through extra-constitutional means.

Time and again, the Filipino people have proven that they are tired of political bickering and they would rather walk towards the economic growth that has been elusive in the past decades and has only been achieved during the Arroyo Administration.

The just-concluded synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections is a proof that the Filipinos want to keep democracy alive and the political institutions, strong.

It is really lamentable that just when the country is starting to reach some gains in terms of the economy and in investor confidence, there are some sectors who are trying their best to destroy these gains through extra-judicial means.

Why are there a few who are very impatient and couldn't wait for the President's term to be completed? They want to ouster the President and they are doing all kinds of hullabaloos to achieve their selfish goal without taking into consideration the consequences of their actions.

If they are able to ouster the President (which is remote), what? The analysts and level headed Filipinos answers are the same. These detractors will fight one another because all of them wants to be the leader. What will happen therefore, is chaos, and the Filipino people will not allow this to happen.

There are rumors that another stronger impeachment move is in the oping as soon as Congress resumes. This will again be a waste of people's money and waste of time which should be allotted to making relevant legislation for the benefit of the country and its people.

The country is doing better under the Arroyo Administration despite the many upheavals brought about by the same detractors, street parliamentary which failed to gain people's support, plopped mutinee, several impeachment cases which all failed.

Methink, the country could have fared better minus these maneuvers of the detractors. If the country will go back to where it has been decades ago, there are only the detractors to blame.

The people have spoken during the October 29 polls, they want to have a hand in choosing their rightful leaders of their choice. Hopefully, the detractors will be given the wisdom to realize the Filipino people means business. (PIA 8 )
