Muslims solidly behind PGMA
Manila (1 July 2005) -- Some 300 Filipino Muslim organization leaders, representing the majority of Muslims in Metro Manila and Mindanao, came in droves and filled the entire second floor of a restaurant along Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City shortly before lunch today to express their unwavering support for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her administration.
Under the umbrella of the Filipino Muslim Democratic Alliance (FIMDA), the leaders insisted that President Arroyo is the legitimate and duly elected president of the country and that "there was no cheating in Mindanao during the last elections because we made sure of it."
Sultan Mohammad Bano, President of the Taguig Muslim Association, said in his privilege speech that the country is suffering too much from the bickering and power grab initiated by the opposition.
"By 2007 there will be another election. Let the opposition wait for that chance," Bano suggested.
He also advised the people not to listen to those whose only motive is to push for their own selfish dreams.
"We can't afford to have another people power again," Bano stressed.
Baebayolan Marhahombsar, who represents the Muslim women's sector, supported Bano's pronouncements and added that the country should move on.
"President Arroyo already admitted her fault and we should forgive her. If Allah can forgive why can't we," Marhahombsar said.
She also said that they are supporting President Arroyo because of the reforms she instituted.
"Muslims and Christians in Mindanao benefited much from the reforms and economic developments that the President initiated in that part of the region. Let her continue and finish her term and stop all destabilization plots," Marhahombsar remarked.
The group joined hands and signed a manifesto of support for the President and appealed to Congress and the Senate to cut short all the investigations they are currently doing.
"The role of these two august bodies is not to investigate but to legislate. They should focus more on creating bills and laws that would benefit our poor countrymen," the group unanimously said.(PIA-MMIO)
