Davao City (1 December 2005) -- Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) XI Director Mercedita Jabagat said older persons should also have access to social services,
access to income generating opportunities, access to
education and training
They also have other rights as to participation and integration to various community endeavors; family and community care and protection; opportunities for development;
freedom from exploitation, physical and mental abuse.
In an orientation training on the Popularization of Republic Act 9257, known as the Expanded Senior Citizens' act of 2003. Which was participated by the Senior Citizen's Sectoral Council acting as consultative body, Senior Citizens Federation Officers; Vice Local Chief Executives, stakeholders and other concerned groups, the benefits of the Expanded law was expounded and discussed Tuesday at the
DSWD conference room.
As of 1995 census, the number of older persons in the
Philippines is placed at 3.7 million or 5.4 percent of the total population of 68.6 million (1995). By the year 2030, older population of the country is projected to be nearly 15 million.
The DSWD, being the lead agency in the development and implementation of programs for the welfare of older persons will spearhead the promotion of RA 9257 otherwise known as the Expanded Senior Citizens' Act of 2003.
Government agencies are encouraged to adopt appropriate policies and stronger action to better the understanding of aging and related issues, to widen older persons' participation in development, and to enhance partnership between civil societies and all other sectors for the well-being of elderly persons.
