Samar remains orderly despite increase in crime volume, PNP claims
Catbalogan, Samar (28 June 2005) -- Police authorities here claimed that
Samar is still peaceful and orderly despite the increase of crime volume in recent months.
Catbalogan PNP Chief P/Insp. Carlos Vencio reported recently that crime incidence in the province this month registered 207, an 11% increase from that of the same period last year which had only 184. The average monthly crime rate (AMCR), according to Vencio, has gone up by 0.7% from 5.7/100T population in June 2004 to this month's 6.4.
Insp. Vencio reported that the police in the province has arrested 11 persons for violation of R.A. 9165, popularly known as the Dangerous Drugs Act, and confiscated some 2.27 grams of metamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu which has an estimated street value of P7,000.
The police officer further reported that, in line with the government's anti-illegal logging drive, Samar PNP has arrested 17 persons for violation of PD 705 and confiscated some 2,656.36 bd.ft. to assorted lumber equivalent to P66,409.
The police also apprehended 52 fishing boats for violation of PD 704 or the Fishery Code. However, several of those arrested were released after paying fines imposed in the local fishery ordinances, Vencio noted.
Meanwhile, Samar PNP also arrested 63 wanted persons, three of whom belong to the top ten most wanted persons in the province, he further reported.
According to Vencio, the continuous prevention and suppression strategy initiated by police in the field through sustained police visibility in crime prone areas contributed much to the success of the PNP's campaign against criminality.
To recall, Samar PNP Deputy Director P/Supt. Leo Uyvico, in the latest Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) meeting, also noted an increase in last month's crime volume but stressed that the peace and order situation in the province is far from being unstable. (PIA)
