NFA Bacolod monitors rice outlets

Bacolod City (29 July 2005) -- The National Food Authority (NFA) has fielded monitoring teams to ensure availability of NFA rice at P18.00/kg in the market and see to it that supply and prices of commercial rice remain stable.

Provincial Manager Gil B. Ibarra said this activity is part of the food agency's continuing efforts to put order and instill discipline in the grains industry especially during the lean months.

As a result of the monitoring activities conducted by the NFA Enforcement and Investigation Team headed by Mr. Porferio O. Lesidan, Jr., 28 grains businessmen in the province were apprhended for violations committed such as rebagging of rice, no NFA license, non-renewal of license and non-display of signboard.

Ibarra said penalties imposed for these violations are payment of not less than P1,000.00 and a maximumof P4,000.00 or an indefinite suspension of NFA accreditation.

Ibarra said the NFA will continue to intensify its monitoring activities to protect consumers from unscrupulous businessmen against price manipulation and other malpractices.

Meanwhile, NFA rice sales have picked up this month because of good quality. Vietnam Rice Average daily sales is 4,800 bags. Todate, 250,784 bags have already been disposed of and sold in 92 accredited Bigasan ni Gloria sa Palengke (BGP) and individual rice outlets. (NFA-PIA)
