Davao City (2 December 2005) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) in the Davao
region is upgrading its laboratory facilities as part of its preparedness plan relative to the prevention and protection against Avian Influenza.
DA-XI chief of veterinary and quarantine division Dr. Jean Bacayo said its office must have a complete laboratory equipment and chemicals to be able to conduct a thorough analysis of blood sampling.
He said each region in Mindanao already have their respective laboratories except for other items which must be acquired to conduct a complete testing.
But he said what is crucial is the
upgrading of skills of the technologists who will conduct the testing.
"They have to be trained further and this is our priority," he said.
Bacayo said there are four teams in the Davao region composed of ten members per team and these are the group that will be dispatched to conduct analysis and testing.
The samples, he said, will be conducted at the rapid animal disease diagnostic laboratory to undertake rapid screening of the Avian Flu.
He emphasized that only screening will be conducted since the final laboratory testing will be either in Thailand or Australia.
"Testing can still be conducted here but it has to be referred to reference laboratory that is accepted internationally," he said.
