19 environment hotspots in Isabela beset with timber poaching carabao
logging
ILAGAN, Isabela, Oct. 1 2002 (PNA) -- At least 19 environment hotspots
throughout this province are now suffering from rapid deforestation
due to unabated timber poaching and carabao logging.
Provincial environment and natural resources officer Felix
Taguba, during a recent briefing with Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR) Regional Executive Director Antonio Principe
here, said forest rangers are now closely monitoring the activities
of suspected illegal loggers throughout the province.
Taguba said a number of wildlife species in the identified
hotspots are facing serious threats due to the continued destruction
of their habitat through illegal logging and other destructive
activities.
The environment hotspots are located in Barangays Cabisera San
Antonio, Bintacan (including Abuan river), Nanaguan and Capellan, all
in this capital town; Barangay Dalibubon in Jones town, Barangay
Annafunan in Echague, and the forested barangays in San Agustin
town.
Barangays Buyasan and Del Pilar in San Mariano; Simanu Norte in
San Pablo; Antagan in Tumauini; Masipi in Cabagan; Bicobian,
Maligaya, Dicadican and Diddadungan, all in the coastal town of
Palanan; Barangay Dipugo in San Guillermo; Villa Concepcion in
Cauayan City; and Casili in Mallig.
Taguba, however, said due to the regular monitoring activities
conducted by the field workers of the provincial office and the
successive operations against timber poachers, carabao loggers and
kaingeros, some of the hotspots may have already been neutralized.
The environment officer denied, though, that there are illegal
logging activities conducted within the forest areas of Isabela but
merely cases of timber poaching.
