February is National Arts Month

Since its foundation over a century ago, the National Museum PH has been the custodian of some of the nation's most important art pieces. The museum's fine arts collection include some of the best representation of Philippine #VisualArts as it evolved through the ages. In addition to movable paintings, sketches and sculptures, the National Museum of the Philippines also monitors and, as an educational and research institution, studies artworks associated with heritage sites such as church ceiling paintings and rupestrian art.

#RupestrianArt refers to rock art or cave art attributed to pre-industrialized civilizations. In the Philippines, the Angono and Alab petroglyphs, as well as the PeƱablanca, Palawan and Lamanok petrographs have been identified and included in the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. Petrographs are drawings or paintings on rock which differ from petroglyphs where images are carved or engraved on the rock surface. The Lamanok Archaeological Complex is one of the relatively few sites in the country which feature rupestrian art.

The #Lamanok petrographs are a collection of abstract figures painted on the wall of a rock shelter at Lamanok point, a group of islets at the northern tip of the Anda Peninsula, Bohol. With its archaeological context, the Lamanok petrographs are likely to be of pre-colonial origins. Artifacts such as pottery sherds (both local and tradeware ceramics), boat coffins, human and animal remains can still be found at the site.

Lamanok had always been regarded by locals as sacred and mystical. To this day, it is a pilgrimage site for many tambalan (practitioners of shamanism), with some of these shamans coming from neighboring Visayan islands and Mindanao.

The declaration of the site as ICP conveys that it is recognized by the state as having exceptional cultural significance to the nation. Moreover, its inclusion in the UNESCO Tentative World Heritage Sites List indicates that the site could potentially be of universal value.
