SAN DIEGO – Two Border Patrol agents with military experience foiled an attempt by smugglers and illegal immigrants who tried to pass a checkpoint by taking elaborate steps to disguise themselves as U.S. Marines.
In court documents, the agents said they were suspicious when the driver did not know the birthday of the Marine Corps — a date all troops know from the day they enter basic training.
In the federal complaint made public Wednesday, the agents also said the group did not act or talk like Marines when the van was inspected at a checkpoint in San Diego County on March 14.
Three U.S. citizens pleaded not guilty to alien smuggling. Three immigrants are in custody as material witnesses. The others were returned to Mexico.
