Toronto Ikea monkey goes viral

By Lindsay Jolivet | Daily Buzz – Tue, Dec 11, 2012

A mischievous macaque that nearly wandered into a Toronto Ikea on Sunday has become a celebrity after the monkey's adventures inspired international news reports and two spoof Twitter accounts.

Shoppers quickly snapped several photos of the monkey wandering around the parking lot of the furniture store.

Twitter user Bronwyn Page tweeted a picture of a tiny monkey wearing a shearling coat. She wrote:

Umm saw a monkey in the #ikea parking lot.

Before long, news outlets everywhere had covered the story, including the BBC. The broadcaster interviewed Bronwyn Page saying shoppers were shocked when they spotted the creature.

"All the people were trying to call it towards them but it was very scared, it was darting all over the place. They were trying to get it away from cars," Page told the BBC.

But the primate never got the chance to assemble any Ikea furniture and make us humans look incompetent because staff cornered it and called the police, according to the CBC.

Toronto police Sgt. Ed Dzingala said the monkey was in a crate in its owner's car but managed to get out and wander around.

"It's a smart monkey," Dzingala told the CBC.

Animal services suspected the monkey was a pet because of its stylish attire and said a man claimed it on Sunday. Reports say he was charged with owning a banned animal.

Owner of stylish monkey found outside Toronto Ikea says she wants him back

A small monkey wearing a winter coat and a diaper apparently looks for it's owners in an IKEA parking lot as customers take photos in Toronto on Sunday Dec. 9, 2012. The monkey let itself out of its crate in a parked car and went for a walk. The animal's owner contacted police later in the day and was reunited with their pet, police said. TORONTO – The owner of a monkey caught wandering outside a Toronto Ikea this weekend says the tiny primate rarely left her side until he was confiscated by authorities — and she wants him back.

Yasmin Nakhuda says she initially tried to return the monkey she named Darwin to the breeder who supplied him, but changed her mind after hearing his heartbroken cries.

After that, Nakhuda says Darwin was near her at all times, including while she slept and showered.

The months-old monkey captured worldwide attention after he somehow let himself out of a parked car Sunday and ambled around the store’s parking lot dressed in a fitted shearling coat.

He was eventually captured by animal control officers and moved to a primate sanctuary about 100 kilometres northeast of Toronto.

Nakhuda, who was fined $240 for breaking the city’s prohibited-animal bylaw, says she is considering legal steps to regain custody of the pet she considers part of her family.

Ikea monkey meme goes viral

A monkey in a coat at Ikea? Let the one-liners and Photoshopping begin!

"Animal Services identified the monkey as a rhesus macaque, an Asian species that is prohibited in Ontario. The monkeys are known for their ability to live in diverse habitats — although Canadian winters obviously require a warm coat.

The owner of the primate turned himself in to Animal Services just after 5 p.m. He was charged with owning a prohibited animal, an offence that carries a $200 fine."

Ikea monkey owner says she wants Darwin back as videos reveal her life with well-dressed monkey

The owner of a monkey caught wandering outside a Toronto Ikea this weekend says the tiny primate rarely left her side until he was confiscated by authorities — and she wants him back.

Yasmin Nakhuda says she initially tried to return the monkey she named Darwin to the breeder who supplied him, but changed her mind after hearing his heartbroken cries.

After that, Nakhuda says Darwin was near her at all times, including while she slept and showered.

“I know he cannot live without me,” said real estate agent Nakhuda.

“And everyone who knows Darwin can vouch for this. He needs his mother like a child needs his mother,” she told CityNews Monday.

Ikea Monkey's owner plans custody battle

TORONTO — She loves her monkey and wants it back.

So says the owner of Darwin the Ikea Monkey, currently in the hands of the Toronto Animal Service.

Yasmin Nakhuda told AM640's John Oakley Tuesday morning that she's sure this is what Darwin would want too.

The real estate lawyer said she's preparing to take the matter to court and begin a monkey custody battle.

She said part of her concern is when she tried to bring Darwin back to its breeder in Montreal, the monkey became very upset and wouldn't leave her side.

Darwin had tremendous separation anxiety, Nakhuda said.

She said she thinks Darwin is missing her.

She understands the reason to send Darwin to the sanctuary, but "I understand Darwin more than they do," Nakhuda said.

The City of Toronto released this photo Monday, Dec, 10, 2012, of Darwin, the monkey found in the North York Ikea parking lot on Sunday.

"He is very clingy," she said. "Darwin is like a human being. He is very special."

She said Darwin considered her its mother and slept and showered with her.

The coat the monkey was wearing in pictures in the IKEA parking lot on Sunday was made to measure, she said.

She is hoping to be able to visit Darwin at the animal sanctuary in Sunderland, Ont, which is located about 95 km north of Toronto. She said her plan was to move to the country to gain more space for Darwin.
