The (World's) Worst Mass Shootings of the Past 50 Years
« on: December 17, 2012, 09:06:42 AM »
some background:

There is no official definition of a "mass shooting," but FBI classifications describe the term as any incident in which a perpetrator kills four or more people, not including him or herself. Under that definition, 19 mass shootings have taken place since April 16, 2007, the date of the Virginia Tech massacre. That's a rate of more than one every four months -- only considering these most brutal examples. Other devastating shootings go largely unnoticed on the national stage. (from Mass Shootings: After 19 In Five Years, Many Thoughts And Prayers, No Real Answers, by Nick Wing and Katy Hall, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/)

The United States’ lax gun laws indisputably, beyond a shadow of a doubt, lead to more gun deaths. The statistics comparing the U.S. to other Western nations with tighter gun laws are staggering: the number of Americans who die in gun accidents in a given year is routinely many times higher than the total gun deaths in the U.K. In Britain in 2008, there were 39 gun murders; in the U.S. in 2009, there were 9,146—that’s right, even adjusted for our larger population, the American rate is 47 times higher. Japan’s recent gun bans have virtually eliminated gun murder in their country. In our country, the states with the strictest gun laws have the lowest rates of gun crime. (from Why the South Loves Guns, by David Sessions Dec 16, 2012, http://www.thedailybeast.com/)
