Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) gave a number of impassioned remarks about the mass shooting in Uvalde, TX, on Tuesday. The attack left at least 14 children and one adult dead at an elementary school in the town. Murphy represents the state of Connecticut, which experienced the horrific Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.
'14 kids dead in an elementary school in Texas right now. What are we doing?' Murphy said in remarks from the Senate floor early on Tuesday evening. 'What are we doing? Just days after a shooter walked into a grocery store to gun down African American patrons, we have another Sandy Hook on our hands. What are we doing? There were more mass shootings than days in the year. Our kids are living in fear every single time they set foot in the classroom because they think they're going to be next.'
'Why do you spend all this time running for the United States Senate, why do you go through all the hassle of getting this job, of putting yourself in a position of authority if your answer as the slaughter increases, as our kids run for their lives, we do nothing?' Murphy asked his colleagues, a reference to the many times gun safety legislation has languished following Sandy Hook, Parkland, and other mass shootings. 'What are we doing? Why are you here?'
