FBI releases photos of two men considered suspects in marathon bombings

By Jason Sickles, Yahoo! | The Lookout – 1 hr 43 mins ago

BOSTON -- The FBI intensified its manhunt in the Boston Marathon bombing case on Thursday by releasing images of two men they deem to be suspects. It asked that anyone with information about the men or who may have seen them in the vicinity of the marathon finish line on Monday to step forward with information as soon as possible.

At a late-afternoon news conference here, FBI Special Agent Richard Deslauriers released surveillance tape and displayed photos of two young men captured in the moments before the twin explosions that killed 3 and injured 170.

"Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers or family members," Deslauriers said. “Though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us."

He described the men as likely armed and extremely dangerous, and said no one should try to take any action to apprehend them. He said those with information should contact law enforcement.

On Thursday morning, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano asked for the public's help in identifying possible suspects.

"I wouldn't characterize them as suspects under the technical term, but we need the public's help in locating these individuals," Napolitano said when asked to give an update on the marathon probe during a Committee on Homeland Security budget meeting on Capitol Hill.

"The investigation is proceeding apace," Napolitano added. "This is not an 'NCIS' episode. Sometimes you have to take the time to properly put the chain together to identify the perpetrators."

Also on Thursday morning, the U.S. attorney's office for the District of Massachusetts sent out a tweet encouraging anyone with information to submit clues, video or photos to an FBI Web page dedicated to the investigation.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama flew to Boston on Thursday to attend an interfaith memorial service and visit hospitalized victims. "Every one of us has been touched by this attack on your beloved city. Every one us stands with you," Obama told the crowd attending the church service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston.

There, Obama honored the families of those killed in the blast—Martin Richard, 8, of Dorchester; Krystle Campbell, 29, of Medford; and Lingzi Lu, 23, a Boston University graduate student from China.

The improvised explosive devices were located about 100 yards apart in the bustling Copley Square area. Several blocks of Boston's downtown remain closed as authorities comb the area for evidence.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Violence haunts Boston area in wake of Marathon terror
By Ben Brumfield, CNN
April 19, 2013 -- Updated 0721 GMT (1521 HKT)

(CNN) -- Violent incidents early Friday, including the shooting death of a college police officer, kept Bostonians on edge just days after the bombing of the iconic Boston Marathon.

Howling sirens pierced the night quiet, and flashing lights lit up the darkness, as dozens of officers from state and city police responded to the deadly shooting on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Hardly an hour later, they were chasing suspects in a hijacked vehicle just less than five miles away.

There were reports that explosives may have been involved before police cornered the vehicle.
"Police were in a standoff with the vehicle just down the hill," said CNN photographer Gabe Ramirez saw the chase end in Watertown. They ordered the suspect out of vehicle and commanded he strip down naked before putting him in a patrol car and transporting him away from the scene, Ramirez said.

Police ran down the streets of Watertown, according to CNN affiliate WCVB, which broadcast images from the pursuit. One man could be seen lying face down on the street in a surrender pose with his hands outstretched in front of him and his legs crossed.

Dozens of police from various units arrived in Watertown, some in SWAT uniforms, others wearing helmets. Large crowds gathered around a trove of emergency vehicles that had congregated in the neighborhood, WCVB reported.

But even with all this activity it was unclear if the arrest in Watertown was related to the shooting on the MIT campus or any other incident in the Boston area.

How it began

The nightly mayhem began, after a university police officer died in a shooting on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus in Cambridge late Thursday, state police spokesman Lt. Mark Riley said.
The MIT officer was responding to a disturbance when he was fired upon, according to the state district attorney's office. He sustained "multiple gunshot wounds."

State police and the FBI were called in after the shooting and found the campus policeman near Building 32 on MIT's campus. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the district attorney's office said.

Dozens of officers surrounded and cordoned off the building, known as the Stata Center, which houses computer science laboratories as well as the department of linguistics and philosophy, according to MIT's website.
The university, which lies adjacent to the city of Boston, requested people stay away from the building as police considered the situation potentially dangerous.

Students and faculty received e-mails to alert them to the event, CNN affiliate WCVB reported.
Residents in the area have been on edge after two bombs ripped through the crowd near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring about 180 others. Police are seeking two suspects in the attack, and they are still at large.

Many news media outlets are in the area covering the investigation into Monday's bombings and arrived at MIT to cover the shooting, WCVB reported.

The Stata Center also contains a food court, WCVB said. It serves as a gathering area for students.

Local police have confirmed that Suspect 1, identified by the FBI this morning has died following a shoot-out with officers, while Suspect 2 has fled the scene.

It follows a night of chaos in the city, which saw one officer killed and another in a critical condition, as well as explosives thrown at police after the bombers stole a car and raced it through a residential suburb.

A massive manhunt is now underway to find the second man, who police say is believed to be armed and dangerous.

The dramatic night began when a police officer was killed during a shooting at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Cambridge campus at around 10.48pm local time (2.48pm NZT), which saw the prestigious university evacuated.

Shortly afterwards an armed car-jacking sparked a police chase, which saw chaotic scenes as officers chased the car from the Cambridge area to the suburb of Watertown a few miles away.

Suspect #2: on the loose

Witnesses reported that they heard explosions and police shouting that the suspects had explosive devices.

Police have now confirmed that the two men wanted in connection with the Boston Marathon bombing, stole a Mercedes SUV at gunpoint. After officers tracked the vehicle it prompted a persuit in which explosives were thrown from the car at officers.

A gunfight also ensued, and Suspect 1 was critically injured. He was taken to hospital and later died. A police officer has also been injured and is in hospital.

Suspect 2 fled the scene, and police are currently searching the neighbourhood for him. They have asked local residents to stay in their homes and not to answer the door unless it is the police.

At a press conference police confirmed that Suspect 2 is the man shown in FBI photos with the white cap, wanted in connection with Monday's Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and wounded 176.

"We believe this to be a terrorist, we believe this to be a man who has come here to kill people," police said.

'Loud blast'

Witnesses described to local media a scene of panic and chaos as police engaged in gunfire with the two suspects.

Rebecca Carbone, 30, stood on the street wearing pyjamas and a sweatshirt and had stepped out when she heard sirens.

"We heard a loud blast and we didn't know what it was," Carbone she told the Boston Globe. "It sounded like a car backfiring."

John Grimes, 69, a retired letter carrier, said that he heard three loud explosions, "and you don't hear explosions at night a lot."

Reporters at the scene were also told to switch off their mobile phones as it was believed the suspects had phone-triggered explosive devices in their backpacks.

Police have also tweeted tonight that there are report of possible suspicious package near the scene, however they did not elaborate.

One of the Boston bombing suspects is dead and the second is on the loose - and said to be armed and dangerous - after a dramatic shootout, right, in the suburbs of the city. Explosions and machine gun fire rocked the Watertown area hours after a police officer was shot dead on the Harvard University campus following a wild car chase. Boston Police Chief Ed Davis tweeted: 'One suspect dead. One at large. Armed and dangerous. White hat suspect at large.' Images of the two men were released yesterday by the FBI, left. The man circled is the one shot dead today and the man beside him the suspect at large.

The two Boston bomb suspects have been identified as brothers who hail from Chechnya but built 'normal' lives in America, making friends and taking part in high school sports.

Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, is on the run and considered by law enforcement to be armed and extremely dangerous.

Yesterday it emerged he was a medical student at the University of Amherst at U-Mass and a lifeguard at Harvard University.

The suspects are reported to be be from the Chechnya, which has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars.

Details of the pair began to emerge today.

They reportedly entered the United States with family in 2002 or 2003 and Tamerlan became a legal permanent resident in 2007.

Dzhokhar was born in Kyrgyzstan. The family, which also included two daughters, Bella and Amina, had the status of refugees at the time they moved to Russia.

Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev went to a school in Makhachkala, the capital city of the Republic of Dagestan, between 1999-2001.
